There are dozens of places to run OpenClaw now, and most of the comparisons are written by whoever is selling. Here is ours — including the part where we lose.

“Budget managed host” and “your own VPS” describe what is typical of those categories, not any one provider. Everything in the ClawStation column is what we actually ship today.
OpenClaw and Hermes both move fast, and both can break on the way up — a Node engine check, a
storage-driver change, an install path the service unit never reads. An unattended
npm update fails silently on all three, and the first person to find out is you,
when your assistant stops answering.
We upgrade both agents across the whole fleet and then verify the version actually running afterwards — not the one the installer claimed. We know exactly how much that matters, because our own upgrade pipeline reported success while installing to a path the gateway never ran from. We found it, fixed it, and the verification step exists because of it.
You need your own API key to start. Several hosts now bundle model credits so you can sign up and start chatting immediately. We don’t — you bring a key from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, OpenRouter or any OpenAI-compatible provider, and you pay them directly at their prices.
That is a genuine extra step, and for some people it is the wrong trade. What you get for it is no markup on inference, no per-message quota, and no reason for us to steer you toward the model that happens to be cheapest for us.
We are also not the cheapest. Managed OpenClaw hosting starts around $3/month. Ours starts at $15, on hardware we own, with a shell and a network of your own. If you want the cheapest possible box, we are honestly not it.
